Forget about Friday the 13th. These days are actually funny ones and most of the ‘bad’ things that happen are quite harmless we usually can have a laugh on. Much more depressing are Blue Mondays, which fall onto one day in January. A psychologist has taken six factors into account and calculated that today, Monday, January 19, 2009 is the most frustrating day of the year.

There is actually no reason to be surprised as these factors include words such as winter weather, getting Christmas credit card bills, failed New Year resolutions, debts, job security and low motivation levels.

Sounds familiar? Than you’re probably not alone. On a Blue Monday more people than usual will call in sick at work. Researchers found out that today will be especially grey and frustrating and expect an increase of 22 per cent in sick notes compared to last year.

One advantage still remains. People don’t have to be ashamed to stay at home or feel low in motivation as scientists blame the credit crunch or house price collapses for having a ‘Super’ Blue Monday today. Psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall said that: ‘The credit crunch means today is potentially the most depressing Blue Monday we have had’.

Cambridge University scientist William Hartson devised another formula calculating that ‘today is also most likely for accidents’ and misadventures. So, all misfortunes happening today - even those at work - are due to Blue Monday.

According to the Mirror, this is the formula that defines Blue Monday: D = N + M (T+1) C R (B-S)/J. D stands for Disaster. N and M is the sum of natural and manmade disasters. T means temperature and C post-Christmas gloom. R stands for the number of failed resolutions. B is borrowing, S means salary and J is job security. The result is Monday, 19th January, 2009.

However, what can one do to overcome a Blue Monday depression. Arnall suggests watching a good DVD or getting some friends for dinner. Probably the best way to beat Blue Monday feelings is going to sleep early and knowing that tomorrow will be a new day, where the formula only can produce better results.
