Assumptions - Copied from Dave Crisp Creative Life Coach web page today Xx

The real challenge is to start paying attention to our thoughts and become aware of when we are making assumptions. When addressing a problem or situation it’s always useful to ask ourselves “what assumptions am I making here?”

Remember the quote from Oscar Wilde “When you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.”  Instead of assuming, ask questions. Sometimes it’s hard to ask questions, because we assume we know the answer and we don’t want to hear it. The fact is, we don’t know what the truth is unless we ask. When you ask instead of assume, you may get an answer you didn’t expect.

Besides killing creativity, making unwarranted assumptions can also:

1. Cause unnecessary stress

2. Waste time and energy

3. Create misunderstandings

4. Cause you to miss out on great opportunities

5. Lower your confidence and create self-doubt

6. Lead you to offer wrong answers

7. Create obstacles that don’t exist

So can I assume this will convince you to practise not making assumptions?

Thanks Dave from ChloeXx

I love what Dave had written and copied his page because I believe negetive assumptions can encourage depression and when somebody made me realise my negative thinking made me feel sad from my negative assuming I realised I could make myself feel better Xx

I told a friend the other day assume the best what have you got to loose they are both assumptions one makes you happy one makes you sad, they are both untruths why choose to torture ourselves with the horrid untruths Xx choose the ones that make us happy and she laughed Xx

I have never thought of assumptions in that way.  It does make sense that they can not only make you fell sad, but also happier.

Sexyed Thanks for that Xx Yes I never realised when I was depressed it was my negative thoughts making me feel so ill. It wasn’t until I heard of cognitive therapy then I asked whats a cognition and somebody said thoughts arhhhhh it started to click so if I think of happy things I feel good and if I think of sad things I feel awful ...yessssss….oh ! so I started a little game the assume game I assumed what people were thinking and see if I could get it right. Guess what I never ever got it right ....I thought my neighbour was cross with me one day for the children being too noisey I assumed !!! then found out there had been a death in the family thats why she looked down when she saw me. My husband used to say when I got worried about people not talking don’t flatter yourself its not because of you or about you THEY are just having a bad day. I have am still learning to detach myself from worrying about other peoples behaviour and worrying why they haven’t said hello or phoned because of me. I just think its their stuff their busy thats why they haven’t mailed texted me back not that they don’t care. Now I have these wonderful make believe happy thoughts and they give me peace I might sound bonkers yet they give me better peace of mind and to not worry so much Xx Chloe

Champion - Assume the worst lyrics

Again you’re pointing fingers, branding me before ever giving me a chance.
Stand on your soapbox and preach your word.
You never let me speak on my behalf, now everything I do is put to the test,
when you have no reason to second guess.

Something I did, it must have hurt,
‘cause now you drag my name through the dirt.
I came in with best intentions, my intentions never understood.

You made your decision without giving me a try.
Again you’re pointing your finger, spread the gossip and never ask me why.
Take my intentions, twist them to conform to your lies.

The rumors are now gaining weight.
When you nor anyone else has facts,
when it’s all said and done, my voice will be heard.
And at that time you’ll eat your words.
You made your decision without giving me a try.

So take your shots because now it’s evident to me
that you don’t even know what I’m about.
Believe everything you’ve heard, because there’s no reason to doubt it.
Don’t look for the truth just write me off and assume the worst

The poem The cookie Theif - Valerie Austin

A woman was waiting at an airport one night
With several long hours before her flight
She hunted for a book in the airport shop
Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop
She was engrossed in her book but happened to see
That the man beside her as bold as could be
Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between
Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene
She munched cookies and watched the clock
As this gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock
She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by
Thinking “If I wasn’t so nice I’d blacken his eye”
With each cookie she took he took one too
And when only one was left she wondered what he’d do
With a smile on his face and a nervous laugh
He took the last cookie and broke it in half
He offered her half as he ate the other
She snatched it from him and thought “Oh brother
This guy has some nerve and he’s also rude
Why he didn’t even show any gratitude”
She had never known when she had been so galled
And sighed with relief when her flight was called
She gathered her belongings and headed for the gate
Refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate
She boarded the plane and sank in her seat
Then sought her book which was almost complete
As she reached in her baggage she gasped with surprise
There was her bag of cookies in front of her eyes
“If mine are here” she moaned with despair
“Then the others were his and he tried to share”
“Too late to apologize she realized with grief”
That she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief

Ben Harper Satisfied Mind Lyrics:
How many times have you heard someone say “If
I had his money I’d do things my way” But
little they know that it’s so hard to find One
rich man in ten with a satisfied mind

Once I was waiting in fortune and fame Everything
that I dreamed of to get a start in life’s game
Suddenly it happened I lost every dime But I’m
richer by far with a satisfied mind

When my life is over and my time has run out My
friends and my loved ones I’ll leave there’s no
doubt But one thing is for certain when it comes
my time I’ll leave here for certain with a
satisfied mind

I got a satisfied mind

Byron Katie asks us to -

Ask are the thoughts we are having true

Are they absolutely true

Turn the thought around

How would I feel if I didn’t have the thought

i.e My friend doesn’t like me

is it true NO

My friend doesn’t like me

is it absolutely true - the answer is No ! I am assuming this thought

Turning it around - in truth I don’t like my friend because she didn’t text me back !

I would feel alot better if I hadn’t had the thought in the first place which made me doubt my friend

Xx

Removing Negative Thought: Tips To Overcome and Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone
This is a guest post from Mark Hayward of the Culebra Blog.

Why do we have these thoughts? How can we break through them and move forward? While I was out walking this morning I was thinking, “Why don’t I just put the humanitarian site up to the best of my ability and see what happens?” Suddenly, I realized that in order for me to start this humanitarian organization I would be stepping well outside of my established comfort zone.

I think this is what might stop many people from pursuing their aspirations. Sometimes it seems easier to just continue on the path that we are already familiar with. As a way to help me move outside my zone of comfort I decided to create a list that I could refer to that would help me begin to manage and remove my negative thoughts. Here is what I have come up with thus far.

Create a realistic and viable plan.
Do something positive everyday, no matter how small, that will help you get to your end result.
Craft your one-minute elevator “sales pitch” because this will require you to really focus.
Accept that sometimes you are going to fail but not trying is more of a failure.
If things begin to go awry maintain a sense of humor.
Instead of saying “I can’t” start with “I can.” For example, change “I can’t possibly run a marathon” to “I can run six miles” now how do I get to the marathon.
Believe that what you are doing (or want to do) is important and make it a priority.
Exercise (always helps to get the endorphins and creative energy flowing).
Help someone; this is one tip that I am going to begin to pursue more frequently because there is no better way to create positive energy than to help someone who is really in need.
For my final tip I would like to add: seek input, advice, and guidance from others. Truly, I would like to hear how the Zen Habits reader community deals with negative thoughts that can creep up when trying to achieve their goals and objectives. Specifically, how have you dealt with negative thoughts or broken through your comfort zone and what tips would you give to others?
